Are Your Dental Habits Harming the Environment?

Our daily dental habits are ingrained in us- we brush our teeth every morning and every night, we replace our toothbrush when we need to, we toss our toothpaste when the tube is empty. But could this daily practise be harming the environment?

Standard, store bought toothbrushes can, unfortunately, have a negative impact on our planet. The plastic used to manufacture many toothbrushes is bad for the environment, ending up in landfills and polluting our waterways. The solution is an eco-friendly bamboo toothbrush.
Read on to find out how making a simple (and cost effective!) toothbrush switch can help to save our planet!

What are plastic toothbrushes doing to the environment?

In Australia alone, roughly 30 million toothbrushes are thrown away each year, while 1 billion toothbrushes are thrown away each year in the United States. Traditional toothbrushes are made from polypropylene plastic and nylon, which are sourced from non-renewable fossil fuels.

Before your toothbrush even makes it to your bathroom, it’s damaging the environment. Manufacturing the nylon used in a toothbrush creates a toxin called nitrous oxide, which is a greenhouse gas. When you eventually toss that toothbrush, it either ends up in landfill taking around 500 years to break down, or it ends up polluting our waterways.

Are bamboo toothbrushes better for the environment?

A well-made bamboo toothbrush has a significantly more positive impact on our planet. While most toothbrushes will still require a percentage of nylon to physically create the bristles, a bamboo handled toothbrush is a far more sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to your traditional toothbrush. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on earth and is a completely natural material, unlike the fossil-fuel-derived plastic and nylon used to make standard toothbrushes. Bamboo requires no pesticides and very little water to grow, and therefore has a substantially smaller carbon footprint than plastic does. It’s also completely biodegradable, which means it can be recycled after use!

What are the benefits of bamboo toothbrushes?

Our favourite bamboo toothbrush, the Life Basics Bamboo & Charcoal Toothbrush, is as beneficial for your teeth as it is for the planet! The bristles of this particular toothbrush have been carefully infused with Activated Binchotan Charcoal, which is known for its natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties as well as its ability to whiten and brighten the teeth. Activated Binchotan Charcoal can also help to improve bad breath by reducing the bacteria that causes it! The Life Basics Bamboo & Charcoal Toothbrush also comes in 100% plastic-free, biodegradable packaging, so you aren’t undoing your environmental effort by purchasing a plastic-wrapped product.

The Many Uses of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has become a pantry staple for many, known for its beneficial effect on digestion, cholesterol, blood sugar and overall weight- but did you know apple cider vinegar is also something of a miracle ingredient for the hair?!

Apple cider vinegar has so many uses, but the effect it has on the hair has become one of our favourite side effects! Read on to find out why you should consider adding a bit of apple cider vinegar into your daily inner and outer beauty routines.

What are the health benefits of apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is most commonly taken orally by either adding a teaspoon or two of organic apple cider vinegar to a glass of water or, more recently, in the form of apple cider vinegar gummies or capsules. As apple cider vinegar is rich in both enzymes and protein, a daily dose can help to control weight, support a healthy immune system, soothe a dry throat, promote digestion and pH balance and help to remove toxins from the body.

What are the hair care benefits of apple cider vinegar?

Beyond being consumed orally, apple cider vinegar can also be applied topically to the skin and to the hair. Due to its natural antibacterial properties, apple cider vinegar can work to kill bacteria, fungus and the yeast on the scalp that can cause dandruff without stripping the hair and scalp of its all-important natural oils. It’s also anti-inflammatory, meaning it can help to sooth and calm an irritated scalp, as well as working as a natural exfoliant to cut through any grime and build up that might leave you with heavy, dull and oily tresses. Rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar can also lower hair pH, fight breakage and restore health to brittle and dry strands. The result? Bouncy, shiny, clean hair!

How to use apple cider vinegar for your hair?

Because apple cider vinegar is so acidic, you should never apply it straight to your hair (which is also why it should always be diluted in water before being consumed orally). To safely mix apple cider vinegar into a hair rinse, work with roughly one part apple cider vinegar and five parts water- this will ensure the apple cider vinegar isn’t too acidic for your hair and scalp to handle. After shampooing, pour the apple cider vinegar and water rinse through your hair, beginning at the scalp and combing it through as you pour to ensure you’re coating each strand from root to tip. Allow the mixture to sit for around 30 seconds, then rinse thoroughly with warm water (essential to remove the scent!) and follow with your regular conditioner.
